For a while now I've had a noticeable vibration in my
truck. I think its slowly getting worse. At about 65mph my
shifter starts bouncing up and down and my passenger side
seat is shaking. I also find that the truck is riding
rougher at all speeds.
I'm not really concerned about ride quality, I'm more
concerned about the bouncing of the shifter causing damage
to my transmission.
Any thoughts??

Has the drive shaft been out of it? Possible carrier
bearing has been replaced and now the u-joints are not in
the same "plane".

The drive shaft has been out but the problem existed and
was just as bad (if not worse) before I changed the
carrier bearing.
Since my original post I have developed a new vibration.
Its like a cyclical rubbing sound and I can feel it
through the driver side floor board and the gas pedal.
Now, I went to a Firestone place to see if they could
help with the issue. They balanced my tires and said that
the type of rims that I have are difficult to balance and
that the weights are likely to fly off. They said the
unbalanced tires and my deteriorating shocks were causing
the horrible vibrations. They have yet to diagnose the
newest vibration...but they said it could possibly be my
rear-end.
If it was the rear-end, it seems like I would be able to
feel that "rubbing sound" through the shifter which has a
physical connection to the rear-end, but I don't feel it
in the shifter, just in the floor board.
They checked pretty much everything else. Wheel bearings,
motor mounts and a bunch of other things, they all said
were fine.
Any ideas?? I will be getting rid of these rims VERY soon
and I'm going to put my stock rims back on. I just hope
the rims being unbalanced hasn't ruined my truck

If you removed the drive shaft, you may have knocked off a balance weight. Typically, they are glued on or are spot welded. This loss of a weight can give all kinds of wierd vibrations.
Look at the shaft to see if you see a "clean
spot where a weight might have been. You can get the shaft rebalanced.

I checked out the drive shaft. I don't see any missing
weights. The only thing I do notice is some tool markings
where I had the shorter shaft in a vice to change out the
carrier bearing. I'm reasonably sure it didn't change the
shape of the shaft.
I did get my old rims put back on. The horrible shaking and
the shifter bouncing is gone. I still have the smaller
vibration though.

Look at the drive shaft again, and be sure the u-joints are
all in the same "plane", meaning the yokes all line up.

did that too. I actually had to pull the yolk off a second
time to put it on correctly. The first time i put it on, I
ran the truck up to speed without the rear axle
connected...the vibrations were deafening! I then ripped
the yolk off and put it back 180degrees from how I had it.
There was almost no vibration. So I'm assuming, that isn't
the problem. Could I still have it screwed up??

The "cross part" of the u-joints must line up as you look
down the drive shaft.

I had the same problem until I got my rims & tires balanced and front end realigned. My son told me a couple of months ago to do these fixes and after going through a set of tires and some physical workouts because of the vibration, I finally went to the tire shop and I don't have these problems anymore. The worst he told me was that my rims could be bent and after checking it out at the tire shop ---- it was okay. Good Luck with your truck!
