We purchased a 2000 Nissan Frontier V6
4x4 with 91K miles
from an individual today. There was a little bit of drama
involved in the sale but carfax showed no issues. So we
went forward with it.

As I tried to move the car from our driveway being there
for a couple of hours, I noticed a puddle of engine oil
underneath. What could be the cause? The car has rust.

Thanks,
Mohmd.

After further checking I realized that the truck has
rusty oil pan. It leaks oil after we drive it for a
little while. I went underneath today and noticed rusty
oil pan at the edge where it connects to the upper engine
part.

I am debating whether I should sell the truck or have it
fixed. After reading other posts I'm thinking it takes at
least $800 for labor and material. We paid $3,800 for the
car. What is your opinion?

$3800 does not sound bad for the miles. How is the rest of
the vehicle, frame, fuel and brake lines, etc.? Timing belt
and spark plugs are due @ 105K if they haven't already been
done. Rear main seal retainer gasket is known to fail on
this engine, be sure to properly identify the source of the
leak.

Thank you, frontierguy. How can I tell if the timing belt
has been changed?

They have sprayed a black tar like paint underneath the
car. It appears like they have replaced the front bearing,
shocks, spark plug wires, etc. I'm sure it's the oil pan
because I can press my finger inside it.

If the timing belt is loose, you will hear a sound like a
bad bearing coming from the distributor area(with the
engine running). When in doubt, have it checked by a
professional.
