I’m at a loss… I’ve got a birthday coming up and probably some cash along with it. I’m trying to decide on an upgrade of some sort for my Fronty. Here’s what I’ve got in mind so far… Gibson exhaust, K&N intake or Weapon-R intake, Nerf bars, or maybe a 2 or 3 inch lift. I’m looking for suggestions or just input on what would be a good choice. Thanks.

go with K&N filter and exhaust (can be had cheaper just buying muffler and having a shop do the piping)

I can do the instal of both the intake and complete exhaust myself. Would it still be cheaper to get only the muffler or would a do-it-yourself be about the same?

go out and compare the cost for 2.5" tubing, and the price to have it bent (assuming you don't have a pipe bending machine).  Also, add in the cost for the muffler.  And compare.

It's still cheaper having a shop do up the piping and install... than ordering a cat-back and putting it on yourself.  Anywhere from $100-$400 less (depending upon the cat-back system)

Look at my Maxima.  Greddy has a cat-back for $525.  I bought a Ravin muffler ($140) and had a shop do 2.5" piping from the cat ($95)

$235 compared to $525.  The only thing a cat-back system MIGHT offer, is mandrel instead of pressure bends.  But honestly... you're not drag racing with the truck.  Pressure will work just as well mandrel in our cases.

Sounds like a good plan. By doing it this way can I buy pretty much any muffler I want or are there still limits to which ones I could get?

I had my exhaust done custom through a local shop here in Shreveport and spent all of $250 for a flowmaster 40 with mandrel bent tubing... it just depends on the shop.

I decided to go with a K&N intake system first. It should be here a few days. I'll let you all know how it works out. Thanks again for the replies.

No problem... have fun.

Watching all these little guys building up their trucks makes me want to cry.

If you'll excuse... I have money to spend.

Right on, dude! You picked up the FIPK. Definitely let us know what type of intake and about what it cost, that would help out all of those people stopping in to get ideas.

No problem... I purchased the K&N 57 Series Gen II Air Intake Kit (FIPK) for my 5 spd 99 Fronty XE-V6 4x4. I researched many, many online dealers for a couple of hours trying to find the best deal. The cheapest I found the complete kit for was $222, but there were no shipping specials so it came to not be the best choice.

I ended up choosing ajusa.com to purchase my kit. Retail is $345, but they sell it for $224 and some change... but the best part is there deals on shipping. They have free ground shipping for basically anything purchased from them and $5 two day express shipping for anything K&N. Needless to say I choose the two day express. Unfortunately the kit is backordered which does suck but was not completely unexpected. I should have sometime next week. I will keep you all up to date on the installation and outcome.
