So, about a year ago a dump truck unloaded its cargo of pea-gravel in the oncoming lane as I was driving. It absolutely decimated my windshield and hood. The front bumper was a little scarred and the driver's side headlight had one little crack at the very bottom of it. The passenger side light had no damage. Insurance gave me enough money to fix the windshield and the hood but not the light.

Now, the passenger light is still very clear and pretty...but the driver's side light has yellowed and is hazy. The little crack letting in road grime, water, and other crap then the light bulb cooking that mixture to the inside of the glass is the only thing I can think that would cause this problem.

My question is, is there a way I can take that front glass off to clean the inside of it and seal the crack, or do I have to get a whole new headlight assembly?

You could seperate the lens assembly and clean the inside, take 2 part epoxy and seal the crack (it'll look weird though), and then reassemble the light (but you'll have to glue and bake the light for a good seal)

Honestly, unless you've done any of that above, it would be easier to just replace the light with a new one.

Thanks for the info. I'll stop by a dealership today and see what they want for a light. Then, I'll try and find one cheaper.

Stealership=$175.45
somewhereonline.com=$82.59

Wow, I didn't think there would be that much difference.

The price also" reflects" the quality of the part! Aftermarket vs. oem. Better off w/
a good used one. (pardon the pun)

That is usually in reference to ebay knock offs.  And I would do more research before making a claim like that.

Was the tail lights and bumper i got for my wife's Highlander online at half what the dealer wanted poor quality?!?!?!

Nope, because the parts I got were actual Toyota OEM parts from a Toyota dealer.  Just because it's in lower price doesn't mean it's a poorer quality.

Actually getting a OEM spec from some parts store can actually be a poorer quality than what the manufacturer actually used.  Good example is 89-94 Nissan Maxima brake pads.  You can get an OEM spec brake pad from a parts store, but all it is, is a match in size, not the material used.  You actually need a softer compound pad than what most brakes use, because they will tear up the rotors.

Now lets flip the coin, Aftermarket > OEM.  There are tons of parts out there that are better than OEM.  How about I swap rotors on a 89-94 Maxima to an aftermarket company like Brembo.  Now I can use whatever brake compound I want since this rotor isn't made from a softer material like the OEM.  And btw... a complete set of Brembo Slotted rotors for my 90 Maxima cost me less than getting a new OEM set from the dealership or online.

It's simple, know what you are getting and the reputation behind who sells it.  Because junkyards are a hit and miss deal as well.

Good point kcidmil, I  was thinking about getting some of the aftermarket headlights with the black  trim inside.  I might as well get what I want if I'm changing the parts out, right?

Be very careful on which headlights you get.  Honestly i bought a set of cheapy lights for F-250 and it was the worst mistake.  They yellowed out after about 3 months and I could never get them aimed right and mounting was just plain weird.  So I just opted to spend $650 on a set of real Harley Davidson Editions.  I had to cut out some of my shell, but I knew the headlights i was getting was real ones, and not just cheap knock offs.

If the company is offering a guarentee or warranty.  And there's not weird modifications then i would do it.  But if they're just a dealer for a company, and things don't seem right, just walk away and save your money.
