2005 Nissan Frontier  6 cyl   2WD

I noticed a few weeks ago that after starting my truck it almost seemed to want to stall.  Thought it was a fluke.  The problem eventually got worse and now it's almost a daily thing.

The truck drives fine otherwise.  Never feels sluggish while driving, idling, or stopped at a light.  Never feels like it's going to stall once it gets past the initial startup.

Thought it was the gas and added dri-gas and fuel injector cleaner.  Still have the problem.  It happens whether it's below freezing or above.  ONLY happens after starting.

Engine turns over.  Brand new battery - less than a year old.  No lights come on the dash, except the Check Engine light flashes as it is in the stalling process, then goes out.

I'd like to get a better idea of what it could be before I have to bring it to a garage and have parts replaced that don't fix the problem.

Just a Wag... SOUNDS LIKE THE AMOUNT OF FUEL GETTING TO THE ENGINE IS TOO LOW.  tHAT COULD BE A FUEL PUMP GOING OUT (DO YOU LET YOUR TANK RUN REALLY LOW BEFORE FILLING UP?), A CLOGGED FILTER IN THE GAS TANK OR EVEN SOMETHING LIKE A DIRTY maf.

Yes, I'm guilty of letting the fuel run low but if it was a clogged fuel filter wouldn't the truck run rough the rest of the time and not just after initial startup?

..

Marcia

The Gasoline acts as a coolant for the electric motor that drives the fuel pump. The pump it’s self can get warm. Letting the fuel run low causes the pump motor to run hotter and shorten it’s life.

If the engine starts instantly when the starter is engaged and then dies it is possible that the fuel rail that feed s the injectors has not built up enough pressure due to partially clogged filter or a weak fuel pump.

Hot gasoline tends to vaporize sooner and that is not good. I never ever run less than a quarter tank of gas.

Good luck.. Don S..

I'm bringing it in today to the mechanic.  I'm curious to see what he says.

Sounds like you are due for: clear self learn control and
Idle Air Volume relearn, both accomplished at your dealer.
Are you using a Nissan oil impregnated air filter?

First off...my air filter isn't an oil-impregnated Nissan air filter and I have 66,000 mi on the truck.

Second.... the mechanic had the truck all day yesterday and it didn't stall once.  I can't believe it.  Today will be my first day with it back and I can guarantee it'll stall.  The mechanic said he couldn't get any codes off it.

What is the "clear self learn control and
Idle Air Volume relearn, both accomplished at your dealer" as mentioned above???

Just as it says, it is a procedure to clear the self learn
parameters and relearn the idle. It is basically like a
tune-up in the old days. I'm sure there are "back yard"
ways of doing this, but working at a dealer, I use the
Consult 3 scan tool. Clean the MAFS with approved cleaner
and get a NISSAN air filter.
